Designer Becky Freeman transforms a home into a family-friendly space.

CANADIAN HOME TRENDS CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE SPACE’S DESIGN?

BECKY FREEMAN This space was designed for a family with busy teenage kids. The layout is meant to accommodate activities like casual chill time with friends after school, as well as intimate settings for the family to enjoy together.

CHT CAN YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT INSPIRED THE OVERALL DESIGN?

BF Although the design was primarily inspired by the family’s love of modern design, the most important feature that they requested was a teenager-friendly interior. The feeling of familiarity needed to be preserved as much as possible and an element of fun was a must. To achieve this I looked to whimsical additions like 3D animal wall décor for the kids’ love of animals as well as introducing lighthearted artwork and patterns in fabrics.

CHT WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN ELEMENT IN THIS SPACE?

BF The Ropes & Wood painted paddles are my favorite design element in the space. They are a dynamic focal point, with a pop of color and understated modern elegance. Modern design is often saturated with monochromatic gray and white tones so the colorful geometric pattern on the paddles offer a fun, bright twist in a sophisticated format. It’s a perfect addition to the clean, Danish inspired design of the home.

CHT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE FAMILY?

BF They are recent city dwellers from the suburbs who are temporarily renting the space until they find their dream city home. They fell in love with the character of this semi-detached rental home with the amenities that the urban neighborhood provided. – Becky Freeman
