Instructions

Preparation

Protect the work surface with newspaper. If the watering cans are newer they may only need to be cleaned and sanded with coarse steel wool prior to painting. If they have been painted remove the paint following the instructions on the paint remover. This step may need to be repeated depending on how many coats of paint there are.

  1. Use a putty knife or copper brush to get the paint out of any crevices
  2. Once all paint has been removed, clean the surface with mineral spirits and let dry
  3. Sand the watering can with steel wool
  4. If necessary, use a small hammer on the inside of the watering can to gently knock out any dents
  5. Use a tack cloth to remove any dust particles
  6. Apply primer to the surface and allow to dry
  7. Use the white primer for light colors and the gray primer for dark colors.
  8. Paint the watering cans with rust protector enamels and let dry
  9. Let the paint harden for 72 hours or according to the can instructions before stenciling
  10. To stencil – place a vinyl cut-out or other stencil where desired, adhere and spray with a light coat Note: If using vinyl or other sticky back stencil, before adhering to the surface place the stencil on your pants or shirt and remove a few times to make the vinyl less sticky
  11. Allow the paint to dry several minutes and then remove the stencil
