(NC)— There’s nothing worse than being stuck in a traffic jam. All that stopping and starting is enough to drive you mad, not to mention send you to pump faster than expected after a trip that got you nowhere.
One way to fight the cost of stopping, starting and standing still is to consider idle-stop or smart-stop technology. Available in most hybrids, the systems actually turn your engine on and off automatically. They’re usually engaged when your vehicle is stopped and your foot is on the brake for a few seconds. Once you remove your foot from the brake, the engine starts up immediately.
Although not new, idle-stop technology is gaining popularity among drivers who want to reduce their environmental footprint and cut their fuel consumption costs. Some experts even predict that a third of all new cars will use some kind of idle-stop system by 2012.
