Cheryl Hickey, the mother of 2 young children and 2 dogs, is best known for her roles as host of ET Canada and Family Home Overhaul on HGTV. She has also recently entered the world of small business with her company, Cheryl’s Home and Family. Cheryl’s first product was created for her son 10 years ago and this spring, the decision was made to relaunch with a simple mission: Care Begins at Home. Cheryl’s collection brings you practical and exciting products that benefit the whole family, available online and through major retailers across Canada.

CANADIAN HOME TRENDS: If you could give your 20 year old self one piece of advice, what would it be?

CHERYL HICKEY: Don’t be so afraid! As a young woman from a small town, I struggled with low self-confidence, fear and anxiety. Today, I keep anxiety in check by making sure I am taking care of myself, meditating regularly, limiting access to the news and investing time in laughing and being silly with the kids. My husband and I call this “checking the boxes”. This year has been especially challenging for many of us and it’s important to stay positive. You can always find things that are wrong. It’s important to train your brain to look for the good. Every day, I take time to look for things to be grateful for, whether it be good health or something as simple as an impromptu dance party in the car while driving my son to school.

CHT How do you think your kids see you?

Cheryl Hickey: I think they would say I am goofy and a little over-the-top lovey/huggy. Hopefully, they would say I am someone they can count on.

CHT What is your favorite room in your home?

Cheryl Hickey: I would have to say either my bedroom or my daughter’s bedroom. My bedroom is just a perfectly welcoming space to retreat to at the end of a busy day. We recently redid my daughter’s bedroom to give her a “big girl” room and it’s the room I would have wanted as a child with bunk beds, a swing and more. It’s just so much fun!

CHT You and your husband recently celebrated 12 years of marriage. Can you tell us what you do to nourish your relationship over the years?

Cheryl Hickey: Honestly, this might be one area to which I could give a little more attention to right now but I think the key is to treat each other as well as we treat our friends. It’s so easy to take each other for granted and treat each other worse than you would your friends or children. You wouldn’t intentionally hurt a friend – yet we do that to our spouses. I tell my husband that I want him to treat me like his best friend, with benefits. It’s important to give that same good energy, that same smile that you give to a friend, to your spouse as well. Be kind to each other and stay conscious of how you treat each other
