New Year’s Eve is just 2 days away and if you’re like most people, you’re already making plans and thinking about your resolutions. Most people have their own New Year’s Even traditions – and some date back many many years. Here are a few interesting facts you might not know about New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Celebrations.
- The first New Year’s was celebrated more then 4000 years ago in Ancient Babylon and was celebrated at the beginning of Spring. These first celebrations lasted 11 days! New Years was not celebrated on January 1st until about 153 BC.
- In early New Year’s resolutions (Babylonian times) the most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment. Today’s most popular resolutions are to lose weight and quit smoking.
- The symbol of a baby to represent the new year comes from Greece in about 600 BC where a baby was paraded through the streets to symbolize the annual rebirth of Dionysus, the god of wine.
- It was traditionally believed that what one did and ate on New Year’s Day could affect their luck for the rest of the year. It was also believed in some areas that your first visitor on New Year’s could bring good or bad luck and a tall, dark haired male was particularly lucky. (Can I get an AHEM ladies?)
- Around the world, fireworks, parties, food and drinking are part of modern day New Year’s Eve celebrations.
