We often make alterations in our homes and lifestyle based on the cues coming from nature. When winter comes knocking we tend to make more soups in our kitchens, play more board games, add a rug to a bare floor or perhaps fill a bowl with pine cones. Our homes have undergone these seasonal transformations based on the physical world since the beginning of man.
We are fortunate today with the many choices we have to dress our beds. In early civilizations the beds were piles of straw, leaves and small twigs; they were adorned with animal skins for comfort and warmth. Bedding progressed over time with the use of flax fiber, cotton and silk. In the beginning, everything was stitched and woven by hand. It wasn’t until the 1800’s that a power loom began to allow for fundamental change in the bedding industry. Today, we have the availability of natural and synthetic fibers, colours and patterns beyond our ancestors wildest imaginations. Even by implementing small changes to our bedding we can change the mood of the room and create a sense of warmth during our colder winter months.
