It’s the holiday season and nothing can replace the feeling of giving your loved ones gifts. But with all of the presents the holidays can bring, it’s important to consider a home inventory.

Many of us don’t realize the importance of a home inventory because we have insurance. While it does create some peace of mind, having your belongings stolen or damaged can be a traumatizing experience even if you’re insured.

“Trying to remember all of the items in your home can add to an already stressful event. Having an inventory of your belongings is one of the best ways to prepare yourself,” recommends Glenn Cooper from Aviva Canada. “An inventory will help you ensure that you have the right amount of insurance and will even help to file a claim faster.”

But who has time to go through every item in their home? It doesn’t need to be an onerous task — all you have to do is take a video of each room in your home. Many insurance brokers or insurers also prepare content lists that can act as helpful starting points.

Whether you record a video or prepare a written inventory of your home, don’t forget to keep it in a safety deposit box or other secure place. This way you’ll be sure to have something to give your insurance representative if your home is damaged or broken into.
