Ask an Expert: Refacing VS Refinishing a Kitchen

What is the difference between refinishing and refacing?

Refinishing and refacing are both great ways to get the look of a brand new kitchen without the expense. The option you choose will depend on the condition and style of your cabinet doors.

Refacing is a great choice if you want to change the style of your doors, if you have a melamine finish that has started to peel or the doors have suffered structural damage. This involves replacing your current cabinet doors with new doors and painting the rest of the cabinetry to match.

If you are happy with the style and condition of your cabinet doors but want a fresh color, you will want to consider refinishing. We start by removing the doors and taking them back to our workshop where they are cleaned, degreased and repaired as needed. They are then sanded, primed and spray painted to any Benjamin Moore color. The rest of the cupboards are painted on site before the doors are reinstalled! – Imran Habib, Sweet Refinishing
