Design Boards: From Playroom to Teen Hangout

This week, I was challenged to create a design concept using a very colorful, very fun, abstract digital print from Prime Walls. I had a hard time deciding what room to focus on so I ended up creating two rooms. The first room is a play room and the second room uses the same key pieces to create a teen study and hangout space!

THE BASIC PIECES:

Abstract Playful Donuts Digital Print, Prime Walls; Andover Mills Area Rug, Wayfair; STUVA/FRITIDS Storage Combination, Ikea; VÄXJÖ pendant, Ikea

To start, I envisioned a white room with one bright, gorgeous feature wall using the Abstract Donuts print. I then choose pieces using colors pull from the blues in the print. I choose this color because it almost acts like a neutral in the space but without losing the fun, bright feel of the print. The rug, light fixture and storage/media set are found in both looks, allowing those pieces to be used even as the room evolves.

THE PLAYROOM:

Items Added: Designer Play Tent, Domestic Objects; Bean Bag Chair, Wayfair; Janod Desk and Chair

For the play room, I added a few fun details and added pops of orange to add an extra layer of color. With this space, you could have gone any direction – adding green or pink instead. I choose to stick to just one additional color because it allows the feature wall to remain the color feature of the room. This also creates a calmer atmosphere for little ones.

Items Added: Findley Alex Pedestal Desk, PB Teen; Link Desk Lamp, Pablo Designs; Custom Throw Pillows from Zazzle; Oriole Chair in Lux Skyfall, Urban Barn

For the teen study/hangout space, I brought in a fantastic plush chair (actually, I’d add two) in a darker tone of the same blue color and a simple white desk to provide a homework space. I then added a selection of fun throw pillows that would reflect the teen’s interest – music in this case – and bring in a variety of colors. Fun accessories like the orange table lamp would also be a great touch. I would add a wider variety of colors in this space for a more high energy, teenage feel.
