CANADIAN HOME TRENDS WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CHANGE THIS SPACE INTO AN OFFICE/CRAFT ROOM?

Lori Steeves The homeowner, who is very creative, needed a space where she could work from home. She also needed a place for her equally creative eight-year-old daughter to work on her artistic pursuits, and sometimes very messy, craft projects.

CHT CAN YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT INSPIRED THE OVERALL DESIGN?

LS The inspiration for this design came from the boundless creativity and colourful, ever-changing art projects that would soon be covering the large, custom-made, bulletin board we placed on one wall. We wanted to create a neutral backdrop for the colourful contents of this room and provide lots of storage for things like art and craft supplies that could be visually distracting and make the room feel messy. We also needed space for books and the homeowner’s inspirational personal items.

CHT CAN YOU OFFER WORDS OF WISDOM TO READERS LOOKING TO RE-DESIGN THEIR SPACE?

LS The most common mistake that I see people making when they start a decorating project is that they go out and shop for individual items without first considering the project as a whole. If you begin without a plan or a clear vision, your chance of ending up with a fabulous, pulled together room is slim to none. Take the time to visualize the space in your head. Do some research on-line. Collect your ideas in a Houzz idea book or on a Pinterest board, then distill the key elements from those images. That’s how the professionals do it!
