This project was a complete gut and renovation of a stone century home in Clarington, Ontario. It involved completely updating the structure and everything within while trying to preserve as much historical character of the building as possible. This included restoring original features such as the deep window wells and the original stone and interior beams while also updating electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems. The interior was reconfigured to open the kitchen and dining room spaces, making them more functional. The end goal is to strike a balance between preserving the past and improving the home for contemporary living. Renovating a century home presented several challenges including:

Renovating an old home can often be more expensive than expected due to the need for specialized labor and materials, as well as unexpected repairs. When you completely gut an old house, you’re basically building a ‘new’ house inside the old one. It can add up extremely quickly. One of my highlights for this design is that it incorporates both the old and the new, we added modern amenities and technologies while maintaining the character of the home with the big, deep window wells and stained glass over the entry door. This creates a unique and beautiful space that blends tradition and innovation. There’s a sense of calm that comes over you in this space. Another highlight is the floating shelving with integrated lighting, a unique, eye catching feature. My goal for this renovation was creating a sense of healing, light, and calm.

I wanted to incorporate a lot of natural light, soothing colors, and textures that promote relaxation. The large windows, tall ceilings and neutral palettes were used to create a bright and airy atmosphere that feels peaceful and restful.

My overall aim for the design was to create a space that feels warm, inviting, and nurturing, and provides a sense of peace and refuge from the outside world. – KateBuilds, www.katebuilds.ca
