Did you know that, if you sleep 7-8 hours a night, you’ll spend about 3,000 hours a year in bed? If you add time spent reading, watching movies, relaxing, recovering when sick and the many other activities that take place in our rooms, the bedroom is easy the one room in your home that you will spend the most time in! We’ve compiled tips to help you learn where to save and where to invest when planning your bedroom decor.

Step 5: Lighting

SPLURGE: A bedroom can be used for many different activities requiring different lighting levels. Your lighting plans should include bright, overhead lighting (for cleaning, putting away laundry, etc) and task lighting for various areas of the room including beside the bed or near the vanity table/mirror. Your main light sources should be on a dimmer switch, allowing you to brighten the room when needed and then lower the lighting level easily when you want a more relaxing atmosphere.

SAVE: Find a lamp you love in a classic style and neutral colours. In the future, when you want to change up the room, you can save by simply replacing the shades for a whole new look!

SMALL SPACE TIP: If space is limited and night tables with table lamps are not an option, wall-mounted fixtures are the perfect option to provide task lighting for activities like reading in bed without using any floor space.
