Marc Atiyolil, Style & Design Editor, Canadian Home Trends Magazine:
Many of our readers are fans of the Steven & Chris product line. If you could pick one, what would be your favorite piece?

Steven:
My favourite piece we have designed is the CC Wing chair. It is an oversized wing chair generous enough to be able to sit sideways in it, and swing your legs over the arm. We designed it that way for comfort and relaxation.

Chris:
I love the Jade sofa we designed…it screams lay on me and take a nap!! It is generous and comfortable, perfect for family living.

Marc Atiyolil:
When designing/decorating a room, what is your favorite design style?

Steven & Chris:

We love contemporary with a twist. We like a sense of humour and always the unexpected…like when you turn a corner and see a 6-foot tall red Asian chair against a wall…and you think, wow, that’s unusual. We think design should be personal, and if it strikes a cord in you then it works. Never mind what someone else thinks.

Marc Atiyolil:
Where do you find your inspiration?

Steven & Chris:
We use travel as inspiration…sounds cliché, but we have been lucky enough to travel to exotic destinations (Bali, Thailand, Vietnam) and we have developed a new found respect for the artisans of those cultures.

Marc Atiyolil:
For our Canadian Home Trends readers that are looking to update their look for spring, what colours would you suggest as this seasons’ “hot colours”?

Steven & Chris:
There are so many trends out there and who can decide on just one? Based on what is happening with the economy we say go bold and bright. Choose a colour pallet that will put a fire in your soul and inspire you to conquer the world…or just put a smile on your face.

Marc Atiyolil:
What are your thoughts on the growing “Green” trend in today’s market?

Steven:
We have covered many segments on Steven and Chris on `green design` and I am amazed on how far it has come. `Green ` design has touched so many aspects of design that it is now a necessary part of life and a way of thinking…not a trend.

Marc Atiyolil:
When entertaining at home, do you prefer formal or casual dining?

Steven & Chris:
We both love casual dinners and we love to involve our guests in the dinner process. We love to have everyone in the kitchen around the center island and get people cooking…it’s so much better.

Marc Atiyolil:
What is your favorite aspect of a Canadian home décor magazine?

Steven & Chris:
The beauty of Canadian based magazines is that the consumer can be supplied with products relevant to what is available here. We strive for that on Steven and Chris so the viewer can actually get the products and information we supply on the show. We feel that our country has fantastic resources and products and it is not necessary to look anywhere else for good design.

Marc Atiyolil:
If you could tell our readers the biggest home décor faux pas, what would it be?

Steven & Chris:
We feel the biggest faux pas is not listening to yourself. We often rely on what others think…like asking your neighbour to come over to critique your newly designed kitchen. We say if it works for you and your family then who cares what anyone else thinks!

Marc Atiyolil:
How did you get started in the design industry?

Steven & Chris:
We both loved beautiful things and beautiful spaces…and we dreamt a lot…never give up on your dreams.

Marc Atiyolil:
If you could do it all again, what would you change?

Steven:
I had a chance to go to school for furniture design. I was accepted at the school but decided to pursue a fine art degree…but I would never change the past!

Chris:
I would have taken the time to enjoy my accomplishments (career & personal) a lot more. The one thing I have learned from doing the show Steven and Chris is that the ‘now’ is the most important thing. Enjoy today.

Marc Atiyolil:
Did you always know T.V was in your future?

Steven & Chris:
Actually we both dreamt of being back up dancers for Madonna…but luckily the universe had different plans for us and brought us TV. We are both bad dancers.

Steven and Chris airs daily at 2pm on CBC.
