Design and function combine to create a dream basement for a young family that loves to entertain.
CANADIAN HOME TRENDS CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE SPACE’S DESIGN AND THE LAYOUT?
STEPHEN MORGAN This design was based on the concept of creating the ultimate entertainment area for a very active and social family. The 2,200 square foot basement incorporates a theater room, custom wine cellar, complementary bar area, kids play section and additional lounging space with a fireplace. Both accountants by trade, they understand the value of spending money to create a difference rather than spending it where you would never notice.
As a result, the finished space features many gorgeous and thoughtful details like beautiful double barn doors that also allow the adults to keep track of their little ones playing within their own space. The wine cellar was also designed with both function and style in mind. Wall to wall glass with a key lock door keeps children out but allows full view of the stunning wine cellar.
CHT CAN YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT INSPIRED THE OVERALL DESIGN?
SM The Designer, Amy Bray, wanted to create a nature inspired space with a modern feel. The materials were selected from nature’s palette, including Silver Fox marble, walnut, pebble honed travertine, and Mother of Pearl polished slate.
CHT WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN ELEMENT IN THIS SPACE?
SM A favorite is the bar area which features 3D Mable and Quartz countertops, a mix of solid maple and painted cabinets and a Mother of Pearl Chevron backsplash. The bar is designed to utilize space under the staircase and creates multiple functioning areas including a cleaning space, mixed drink space and cooking area.
CHT WHAT IS A COMMON MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE WHEN REMODELING?
SM People often focus more on what is beautiful than what is functional. As a designer or homeowner, you need to focus on practicality first, then add that designer touch. Without a functional space, your love for it can easily be tarnished. – Penguin Basements, www.basementscanada.com
