Entertainer’s Home Designer Space With Greg Nielsen.  CANADIAN HOME TRENDS WHAT INSPIRED THE OVERALL DESIGN?

GREG NIELSEN The property had a lovely creek running through it and the home was designed to take advantage of that feature. The front entrance and garage are located at the back of the house and you drive past the creek to get to the house. The resulting outdoor living space has south and west exposures to take advantage of the late afternoon sun.

CHT CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE HOME’S DESIGN AND LAYOUT?

GN The homeowners have a large extended family and they often host large gatherings. An open concept layout with high ceilings, a large, open kitchen and a basement game/theatre room with a built-in bar offers plenty of room for indoor entertaining. During warm, sunny days, the outdoor living space is also designed for entertaining in a resort-like environment with a covered patio, overhead heaters, an outdoor kitchen with dining space and a pool deck that overlooks a putting green. Large glass doors can be opened up to bring the two areas together for larger events!

CHT WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN FEATURES IN THIS HOME?

GN The front entry and stairwell are designed with two-story ceilings and an indoor/outdoor thirty-foot rock feature wall that travels the length of both floors and continues down into the basement. The front entrance is separated from the living room by a two-sided fireplace. This provides some privacy between the two spaces but still allows light and movement to travel between. As an extra touch, we mounted a motorized art piece above the fireplace in the living room so the TV can be hidden when not in use.

CHT WHAT IS A COMMON MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE WHEN DESIGNING A LUXURY CUSTOM HOME?

GN One of the biggest mistakes we see is homeowners designing a home that isn’t true to their own personal style and lifestyle. When we begin a luxury custom home project, we work with the homeowner to establish a list of their wants or wishes for the home and then we also take into consideration their lifestyle, the available space, features of the property itself and their personal style to ensure the finished home is a space they will truly love for years to come. – Greg Nielsen, GD Nielsen Homes, www.gdnielsen.com
