CANADIAN HOME TRENDS CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE OVERALL DESIGN?

DIANE ERNJAKOVIC Homeowner and Architect Alison Strickland wanted her bedroom to be a retreat where she could decompress and relax. She was looking for a soft and pretty environment with touches of pink and a must have large cozy chair to curl up in. Attention to detail was important in all aspects of the design from the architectural elements through to the final finishing touches.

CHT WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN ELEMENT IN THIS MASTER BEDROOM RETREAT?

RACHEL KEACH We love how the full height bedside mirrors and pendant lights make a commanding yet soft statement in the room. We enjoy the small details such as the hints of pink on the custom drapery valances and the whimsical pompom trim detail on the pillow shams.

ALISON STRICKLAND In the bathroom, I love the recessed LED shower strip light that washes the textured wall tile along the whole length of the shower.

CHT COMMON MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE WHEN DESIGNING A MASTER BEDROOM RETREAT?

DE A common mistake is not seeing the whole vision before starting. Often people will judge isolated finishes or design elements instead of building the whole vision first which allows one to see how the finishes, textures and colors will integrate. Layers of lighting are vital to a room where your tasks will range from busy activity to quiet lounging. And finally, we always recommend investing in a quality bed and bedding .

CHT WHERE DID YOU SAVE AND SPLURGE IN THE MASTER BEDROOM?

RK In the master bedroom retreat, we splurged on a custom cozy lounge chair in a perfect soft pink distressed linen fabric. A wall-to-wall sheer in the ensuite and custom drapery in the bedroom were also worthwhile splurges. AS We saved by using existing plumbing locations for the toilet and shower and splurged on the Krion premade shower tray with the custom integrated ledge.
