(NC)—Did you know that any pleasure craft powered by a motor of 7.5 kW (10 hp) or more must have a valid licence? A valid pleasure craft licence is a set of identification numbers that must be displayed on both sides of the bow of your boat, that helps law enforcement and search and rescue workers identify pleasure craft in emergency situations.
To get your free pleasure craft licence, you must mail a completed application form, along with proof of vessel ownership and a signed photocopy of a valid piece of government-issued identification, to the Pleasure Craft Licensing Centre.
Application forms are available online at www.boatingsafety.gc.ca or for pick-up in person through your local Service Canada Centre, which no longer issues pleasure craft licences “over the counter.” For Service Canada locations visit www.servicecanada.gc.ca.
The application form allows you to apply for a new licence, transfer an existing licence, update your licence information, order a duplicate licence or cancel a licence. If there are changes to your name, address, or particulars of your pleasure craft, you must update the licence. When buying a pleasure craft, participating boat dealers can apply for a licence on your behalf electronically, so you can get out on the water right away.
