Expert Bathroom Design Secrets from Canada’s Best

This custom master suite was designed around the client’s vision for a light, modern, and distinctive space. A creative twist on traditional arched mirrors set the tone, while fluted vanity detailing adds depth and texture. A soft off-white and greige palette is warmed by brushed brass fixtures, bringing understated luxury. Thoughtfully layered lighting, including concealed shower lights, cove lighting above the tub, and backlit mirrors, creates a spa-like ambiance that balances function and mood. From early renderings to final finishes, every detail was intentionally planned, resulting in a serene yet striking retreat tailored for modern living.

My approach to bathrooms is to treat them more like the other rooms in the house, so nothing, except maybe wall to wall carpet, is off limits.  I LOVE wallpaper in a bathroom/powder room, especially when it is paired with bead board or shiplap paneling. I also like incorporating original artwork and statement lighting is a must – over the tub or sconces beside the mirror.

This bathroom with the navy shower tiles and patterned floor belongs to the basement of a Modern Vintage home we designed. We transformed the basement into a self-sufficient, semi-private suite for the owners’ two teenage daughters, and this is their bathroom!

What I love most is that you’d never guess this is a “basement bathroom.” From the custom vanity in deep blue with brushed gold hardware, to the vintage-inspired patterned tiles, and the stylish tub/shower wrapped in rich navy subway tile, it feels polished, practical, and perfectly suited for the young ladies.

The bathroom with the soft blue penny tiles is the parents’ ensuite on the upper level. The original layout was cramped, with a tub tucked under the sloped ceiling and no shower at all, an especially big challenge for our very tall client. By borrowing just 16 inches from the adjoining office, we were able to completely reimagine the space.

We designed a spacious glass shower with a bench by the window for enjoying the view and added slim pedestal vanities to keep the room feeling airy. Smart storage solutions include recessed medicine cabinets and wall-to-wall cabinetry cleverly tucked into the low end of the slope.

What I especially love is the use of a single material, dreamy blue penny tile, applied throughout to draw the eye upward and celebrate the unique sloped ceiling. The antique-style bronze vanity legs add a subtle nod to the home’s history.
