It seems that chrome and brush nickel is out and gold is in again and has been for the last couple of years at least. Everywhere home design pages these days seems to feature gold accents on everything from furniture to flatware. If you are ready to jump on this band wagon, here are some ways to add some gold glamour into your home without breaking the budget.

First let us start with some basics.

Gold or brass finishes are not what we remember from the 80’s. The trend seems to have returned with a vengeance and can really add a punch to a blah room or style.

The addition of gold accents can go with pretty much any colour but it works really well with dark rich colours like black, navy blue and dark hunter green. But don’t worry, it will go with everything.

If you currently have all chrome of brush nickel finishes in your home, rest assured that mixing metals is completely fine, even with warm and cool tone metals. When done properly, it can really add greater depth and visual interest to a space.

Accents

If you are unsure, start small with toss cushions, picture frames, table lamps or tabletop accessories. These are low investment items and can be changed out anytime. Even easier, you can use some of your existing accent pieces and just update the look with a can of gold spray paint.

Hardware

Let’s talk gold hardware! They are like the jewelry on an already beautiful cabinet. Gold hardware is being applied by designers everywhere in kitchens and bathroom, including fixtures and boy does it look magnificent. And yes, even if you decide to add gold hardware to your kitchen, you can still have stainless steel appliances. Remember the note about mix metals above.

You can give your existing kitchen hardware a coat spray paint as well, though I do not recommend the treatment for kitchen and bathroom fixtures.

Lighting

Light is like the jewel of the room and a gold fixture will certainly give the room that bling you may be after. There are so many gorgeous lighting options available, and some with mixed metal finishes if you’re uncertain still. But really, just to go for it.

Furniture

Ah, last but certainly not least, if you really want to fully embrace the gold trend, start small and invest in a few smaller pieces, such as accent tables or chairs with gold accents. Don’t worry, it will really amp up the style of your space and give it that adult, contemporary and luxurious feel that you’ve been looking for.

Style does come full circle. Gold is back and will be here for a while. Embrace it. You won’t regret it.
