WHEN ASKED WHAT PIECE IN THE NEW COLLECTION WITH URBAN BARN IS HIS FAVORITE, Tommy jokes that this is like asking a parent which child is their favorite! “But” he continues “I don’t mind telling you I brought my UB Bandanna Quilted Throw to my family’s Northern Ontario cottage this past summer and was not allowed to bring it home. It’s OK though, I can get another one. I think one of my nieces is still wrapped in it.”
Many years ago, Tommy Smythe had a little one room apartment that he called home. It was lovingly furnished with family heirlooms, RL linens, antiques and things he had picked up during his travels. Guests quickly fell in love with his home and some even asked for help finding things to furnish their own homes. Before long, a love for design grew from a hobby to a full time passion.
This passion has resulted in a bright, colorful career in interior design such as 19 years of working alongside Sarah Richardson on her various shows including Design Inc, Sarah’s House, Sarah’s Cottage and more. Tommy has also appeared in HGTV’s Home to Win and Family Home Overhaul. In 2020, TOM Design Studio was launched where Tommy partners with Lindsay Mens Craig and Kate Stuart to create stunning spaces.
H2022 brings another exciting phase for Tommy with the launch of his own collection available through Urban Barn locations across Canada! The limited-edition collection features home décor inspired by treasured heirlooms and vintage market finds, bringing Tommy’s signature style to design enthusiasts across the country. Staying true to his values around veganism and sustainability, Tommy’s collection with Urban Barn features vegan leather, recycled materials, and functional items designed to stand the test of time.
Tommy Smythe is very excited about the reintroduction of safe travel. He has always loved the unique challenges of working in different regions, and so getting back out there has been stimulating creatively. “It has been so grounding to be with people again, and I believe that, more than anything, is such an essential aspect of what we do”.
