Trendsetters: Chloe & Ben

Etalk’s Chloe Wilde and her partner Ben Johnston always knew they wanted to funnel their creativity into design projects like their home, The Loft in downtown Toronto and their rental property, The School House in the Kawarthas. Their biggest inspiration comes from a definite focus on minimalism, strong lines, warmth, and love for all things oak. They are Airbnb superhosts!

The Loft was the first time they dipped their toes into the design space and got to start from scratch and bring their vision to life. It then expanded into elevating The School House’s interior and exterior into an oasis for guests to escape the hustle of the city and reconnect with nature. The School House Airbnb has a very calming aesthetic with many thrift finds that add warmth, character and that perfect dose of je-ne-sais-quoi. When you walk onto the property, you are immediately transported from your never ending to-do list to the present moment, here and now.

CANADIAN HOME TRENDS If you could have lunch with any one person in the world, who would you pick and why?

CHLOE Oprah, hands down! Not only is she a true inspiration in the journalism space, she is also a force, an icon, a role model and trailblazer for so many. Plus, I’m imagining we’re having a backyard lunch with fresh produce from her epic garden.

BEN Damien Hurst is one of the most interesting artists living today and I feel like he would be a great person to bounce ideas with and learn from.

CHT If you could go back 20 years, what advice would you give your younger self?

C&B Take a chance on yourself sooner, say YES to life and watch your dreams unfold.

CHT Name one thing on your bucket list.

C&B We definitely have “renovate a church into a rental property” on our long list of dreams!

CHT What is your favorite room in your house?

C&B We love sitting at the kitchen island at The Loft, on our beautiful oak and white metal barstools sipping hot coffee on a Saturday morning looking out the window to the terrace, soaking up the fig tree that somehow still hasn’t died and day dreaming about our next design project. At the School House, we’re cozying up on our thrifted renovation hardware-esque brown leather couch in the middle of winter with the fireplace roaring looking up at the expansive bookcase filled with vintage goodies and keepsakes from travels to Mexico, Uganda, South Africa and more. – Chloe Wilde and Ben Johnston www.instagram.com/thechloewilde
