(NC)—Are you looking to get the sleek look of a wall-mounted TV but worried you won’t be able to install it yourself? There is a common misconception among flat-screen TV owners that mounting your TV on the wall is a complicated project, when in fact, it’s much easier than you may think. Sanus, a leading maker of mounts and accessories, offers these tips to help you get your LCD, LED or plasma screen mounted in practically no time at all.
Get a compatible mount
The first step is purchasing the right mount. Mounts aren’t one-size-fits-all and you’ll need one that works with your specific TV make and model. Many manufacturers, including Sanus, offer helpful online mount finder tools that allow you to search compatible mounts for nearly any TV.
Find stud locations
Use an electronic stud finder and mark stud locations with a small pencil tick on the sheetrock so you know precisely where to install the mount. If your walls are brick or another material, you may need an adapter kit. Another tip: To avoid neck and eye strain while watching TV, hang the screen at eyelevel from the couch or chair, or wherever you’ll most often be sitting. For most people, screen height should be 40 to 60 inches off the ground.
Mount it
Most mounts can be installed in a few easy steps. Many mounts come in two (or sometimes more) pieces: A bracket that attaches to the wall and a bracket that attaches to the back of the TV. It’s best to attach the TV bracket first in the rare event the mount doesn’t fit. Some full-motion mounts also come with separate extension arms (if they’re not already attached to the brackets), which allow you to pull the TV away from the wall and swivel it in various positions. Once the brackets are installed, simply hang the TV on the wall plate and secure the two pieces together. Make sure to follow all of the manufacturer’s instructions for proper installation.
