An island is a coveted kitchen feature for added storage and workspace. Here are a few of our favorite ideas to give your kitchen a unique yet functional island.

Small Space Solution

The kitchen was like a Rubik’s Cube puzzle and this butcher-blocktopped rolling island helps make this small space look and feel bigger. This movable workspace is easily shifted to be used as a stove-side counter top when needed, and stored as a regular counter top when not in use. The idea came to designer Nichola Evans from Kon-Strux Developments when she was designing the space and trying to decide how to increase its flow and functionality. – Kon-Strux Developments, www.kon-strux.com

Apothecary Inspiration

This gourmet kitchen island was designed around locally acquired historic apothecary casework. – Designer, Richard Laughlin, Laughlin Homes & Restoration, www.hillcountrybuilder.com; Restorer, Laughlin Homes & Restoration, www.hillcountrybuilder.com; Photographer, Blake Mistich, www.blakemistich.com

Nautical Dream

This boat island was actually built like an authentic dory boat but with a flat bottom. A built-in microwave drawer and additional storage space were also included in the stern. – Architect, DiMauro Architects, www.rondimauroarchitects.com; General Contractor, Pastore Builders,  www.pastorebuildersri.com; Photographer, Warren Jagger, www.jaggerfoto.com

Repurposed Pantry Doors

We love this kitchen island made of repurposed pantry doors and an industrial shelving unit by Tiger Lily’s. – Tiger Lily’s, www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com
