Whether you work at home or in an office, it is important to keep your work space organized. However, this can be easier said than done at home where you have to deal with less than ideal work conditions at times. Where to find the space for your stuff not to mention keeping it away from the kids and the dog? Read on for some tips.
Use A Wardrobe Or Closet To Organize
If you have an extra closet, you can keep all of your work items in there. When you need something, you can go to your “office” to get it. Of course, you need to organize your items in boxes in the closet. When I first started working at home, I bought a free standing wardrobe as we didn’t have an extra closet and used that.
Set Some Ground Rules
I will never forget the time that my daughter went into my file cabinet, grabbed some papers and finger painted all over them. The sad thing was that those were very important work papers. After that, I set a rule that they were only to use blank paper to color, cut or paint.
Put Your Things Away
It is tempting at times to let things lie around, especially if you haven’t finished your task. If you work at home, you may not have that freedom. I have learned the hard way that I always need to put my things away. Once, I left my laptop sitting on the couch and went to do something. I came back and the dog had hit the delete button–deleting my entire project.
Take The Time To Stay Organized
It has been said that time is money. Having said that, it can be difficult to find the time to organize and stay organized especially if you are getting paid per project. The time it takes to organize means that you will not be working on projects. This is why it is important to stay on top of things and to organize a little bit at a time.
Set A Schedule
This is very important too. While you may work as much as you are able to do so through out the day, you should still aim to organize your day. In other words, you might say that you will work before the kids get up and then again when they go down for naps. Some people set a time where they work and stick to that schedule.
While a work at home job can be great because it gives you some freedom, you also need to be organized if you work at home. When you are organized, your life will go much more smoothly.
