Prepare Your House for Autumn

Are you ready for autumn? The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that many regions in America experienced extremely high temperatures this year, so it may seem as if summer will never end. Yet make no mistake: fall is on its way.

For homeowners, that means chores are looming. Plan ahead and take care of these tasks now, while the weather is still mild and evenings are warm.

Roof

Start with a visual inspection. Look for uneven areas or worn spots. Recent wind or hail storms may necessitate storm damage roof repair Denver CO. A leaking roof can lead to extensive damage throughout the house, so address issues early.

While you are up there, clean the gutters and reseal any cracks. Replace broken or sagging sections if necessary.

Fireplace and Chimney

You probably cleaned soot out of the fireplace and surround as part of your spring cleaning, but give it another once-over. Dust and debris may have collected over the last few months. Have your chimney serviced by a professional. The cleaning and inspection is inexpensive, but a blockage can be costly.

Siding

A visual inspection should verify that siding is in good shape. Patch holes and seal cracks if you find any.

Windows and Doors

Check around windows and doors for signs of wear and tear. Hot summers can dry out seals, caulking and weatherstripping. Replacing these items is relatively easy and will dramatically improve your home’s comfort during the winter.

Sidewalks and Driveways

Concrete surfaces are prone to cracking and crumbling. Small imperfections now can turn into big nuisances once cold weather hits and freeze-thaw cycles cause unsealed cracks to grow. Fix compromised concrete and asphalt while temperatures are still high enough to allow proper curing.

Yard

Move furniture to a protected location. Store outdoor sofas, tables and chairs in a storage shed or garage for the best protection. If you have no inside storage, be sure furniture is in a sheltered spot, protected from wind, rain and snow.

Remove debris and put away garden tools. As leaves fall, they will hide anything you have left outside, making the entire area one big tripping hazard.

Unless you live in the southern region of the U.S., fertilize your lawn now. Once you have collected your last harvest, condition garden soil, too. Now is the time to plant bulbs.

Inside

Replace air intake filters and run the furnace. If you detect a burnt smell, have a professional inspect the unit. If there are any issues with it, you want to know now, while there is ample time to repair or replace this essential appliance.
