Retired CFL pro-athlete Sebastian Clovis actually fell in love with renovations before he fell in love with football! He started working as an apprentice at the age of 14 and continued until he left for college on a football scholarship. Having played professionally for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the B.C Lions, Sebastian decided to retire from football in 2009 and launch his own home reno business where he can be creative and help others. As the co-host of HGTV Canada’s Save My Reno series, Sebastian works together with Designer Samantha Pynn to help homeowners complete their renovations on a limited budget.
CANADIAN HOME TRENDS: What advice would you give young people interested in trades?
SEBASTIAN CLOVIS: Just do it! I don’t mean go and take your mom’s walls down or tear out her cabinets! Go and fix the fence outside, fix the bird feeder, level out the stones leading up to the house. Start looking for the little things that need to be done.
CHT: What is your favorite room to work on?
SC: The kitchen is the most exciting room for sure, because it has the most elements and you have to make them all fit together. It is the ultimate orchestra.
CHT: What would we see in your garage/workshop?
SC: You’re touching on a secret part of my life right now! There are a few people out there who call me the squirrel because I just store everything away! There are a lot of scrap wood and interesting old pieces in my workshop. I’m an upcycle enthusiast and I have a hard time throwing things away when I know there are ways I can upcycle them. Upcycled pieces add so much more interest and personality to a room.
CHT: What is something you could not live without?
SC : I’m a very minimalist type of person without a lot of attachments. I would say my dog. I would not want to go a day without her.
