Black is never out of style. Black is great as an accent to create drama, a backdrop to make the subjects in front of it sparkle and shine or simply to punctuate an element. Black is timeless and transcends all styles; from traditional to contemporary and everything in between. Black can be bold and up front or it can be demure and hang back as the supporting element.
Make a small space stand out and make a statement. When clients say a room will be smaller in a dark colour, I say ”measure the room before and after you paint a dark colour. I guarantee the size will be the same!” When you design a small room such as a powder room in black, you create an atmosphere. You allow the room to ‘hug’ you as you enter. I love creating a dark small space, especially when there is a lack of light. To make it work, you need to balance the depth of colour with reflective surfaces and a variety of textures.
Black doors are a great way to add classic or contemporary drama to your space. This image illustrates how perfectly appropriate black can be in any space. If you do one thing only; paint your front door (interior and exterior) black. It will create a statement and it is truly neutral.
Black will make any colour POP. I love this image of umbrellas set on a background of black and grey. The texture and reflection provides depth while the colours resonate personality. This image could easily be an inspiration for the decoration of a space. Imagine a black wall in your entry way with a colourful contemporary piece of art against it; what a statement!
An accent piece of furniture in black will act as a sculptural statement. Consider acquiring a piece of furniture with a bold shape like the chair in this image.
Some of my favourite black colours from Benjamin Moore. Try it out as an accent wall, accent fabric or, if you dare, envelop your whole room in black. Whether it is just a splash or the whole canvas, black is a colour we can all infuse into our interiors.
