The LBD…most women have one..the ‘little black dress’…it is a staple in a basic wardrobe. Black is such a ‘go to colour’ or ‘non-colour’ in our daily lives, yet we shy away from it when we decorate and design our homes. I asked myself why? I think it’s mainly because people are afraid of sucking the light out of a room, however, if used properly, Black can create stunning, dramatic and cozy interiors.
Black requires the use of details with broad strokes, it requires quality lighting and a variety of textures to appear welcoming as opposed to feeling somber and sad. Like any other colour, black has undertones, some warmer, some cooler. My favourite would be one with a cooler bluish undertone, looks as great with Carrerra marble as it does with all shades of wood.
Using black in small doses such as painting your interior doors is a good start, creating a feature wall with built-ins in black is a gorgeous addition to a family room or you can take it all the way and build a black house…black never goes out of style. Here are some fabulous uses of Black in Design:
Whimsical Contrasts
The contrast of black with brick and wood is perfectly harmonious. This San Francisco kitchen is very well executed and the large shades add a whimsical expression. Black gives it a sophisticated touch.
