JASON FROM THE MASONRY GROUP TOOK US ON A TOUR OF A BEAUTIFUL OUTDOOR KITCHEN THAT IS PERFECT FOR A BBQ OR GET TOGETHER.

CANADIAN HOME TRENDS CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE DESIGN?

JASON THE MASON This wood-fired oven, outdoor kitchen is one of our latest designs. Our ovens are built in a traditional dome construction which is very important for its performance. We then build a square structure around it to have a more modern, contemporary design. The overall flow is great, with a 42” built-in professional grade BBQ with storage underneath, a built-in double gas burner with a pull out garbage bin, electrical outlets and undercounter ambient lighting. The 4’ by 8’ island has plenty of storage space below and is also equipped with electrical power outlets and undercounter lighting. The countertops are also designed for exterior use. They are heat resistant to the sun, scratch resistant and overall very durable and designed to withstand Canadian temperature fluctuations. We designed the layout so its operation would flow like a standard kitchen. The BBQ is off to one side and has counter space for food prep. The burners and hot temperature oven are close enough to the island for pizza preparation or other foods. The island also functions well as an entertainment space. The homeowners tend to hire chefs to use this space for entertaining their guests. I’ve been told by these professional chefs that the flow and operation of this outdoor space is fantastic and one of the best they’ve ever used!

CHT WHAT INSPIRED THE OVERALL DESIGN?

JTM We noticed that the newly built pool house has a modern design but the home is traditional. The home features stone and massive windows complemented by its castle-like setting with amazing landscaping. When we started working on the design, we wanted to keep that castle look but also incorporate the modern look from the pool house which is adjacent to the location of the outdoor kitchen. The pool house has modern panel cladding and some natural stone that matches the house. We put both designs together and created this amazing outdoor kitchen.

CHT CAN YOU OFFER WORDS OF WISDOM TO READERS LOOKING TO GET AN OUTDOOR KITCHEN?

JTM Don’t choose looks over function. There are many outdoor kitchen designs and materials and prefab kits to choose from, but my advice is to figure out how you would use the space and how much space you need for it to function well. Once you’ve determined the flow and working space needed, then you can begin designing the look. If it functions well and looks great you will use it and enjoy it! Many outdoor kitchen kits look nice but function poorly. A wood-fired oven needs to have space for the fire and food. Many pizza oven kits are smaller dome units that can only fit a small pizza once you’ve set aside your burning area for cooking. A good wood-fired oven should be 4-5 feet in diameter in order to be used properly. A wood fired oven can be used to cook much more than just pizza! – Masonry Group, www.masonrygroup.ca
