How to Style a Room

Designer Jennifer Brouwer explains the importance of planning the little details in our homes.

Foyer

If it is true that first impressions are made in thirty seconds, then there is no doubt but that foyers are crucially important. They must of course be functional first, then beautiful. Lighting is paramount; here we used four pot lights and one centre fixture. An oversized piece of art adds colour and embellishes the space; a bold orange console table is a great spot to house a bowl or basket and for you to throw your car keys. The front door itself can be a great focal point. Note the dark paint colour, the “X” motif and the frosted glass. The chevron rug is a washable throw that can be tossed down to welcome guests. The bench allows guests and family to sit in comfort while tying their shoes; and hey, just for fun we threw in a splash of animal print.
