Multifunctional Family Kitchen – CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE Multifunctional KITCHEN’S DESIGN?

LINDSAY SCHULTZ Function and flow were the key inspiration for this multifuntional kitchen designed for a busy family of four. Their love for natural elements inspired a crisp, cheery palette of natural wood, neutral white and sky blue. Walls were removed to combine the entry, living room, dining room, kitchen and sunroom into one large multifunctional space that allows the family to stay connected while at home.

The new galley kitchen features an oversized island with plenty of casual seating. We purposely offset the sink to one end to allow for a larger prep area as the homeowners are passionate cooks. The cute shelf detail on the back of the island creates interest and allows the family an opportunity to show off different personal items. The island also houses the waste system, sink and dishwasher.

Because of the minimal upper cabinets, the base cabinets consist mainly of drawers to house all the necessities including the everyday dishes. We also created a functional ledge that runs the length of the kitchen which the homeowners can use as a surface off the main counter to display their lovely collection of dry goods and preserves.

CHT WHAT IS A COMMON MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE WHEN DESIGNING A KITCHEN?

LS Getting blinded by beauty! Kitchens are technical spaces. How they flow and function should always be the first priority. Always work with a designer who specializes in designing kitchens and baths. It is money well spent. They understand all the technicalities of cabinetry and fixtures and can ensure that all the finest details come together. Good designers make it look easy but behind the scenes is a fury of brainwave firing on all cylinders to make it go as smoothly as possible.

CHT WHERE DID YOU SAVE AND WHERE DID YOU SPLURGE?

LS We saved by using minimal upper cabinets and choosing a simple range hood. We splurged on the quartz countertops with a soft natural vein that really makes a statement in the space.
